How to read these numbers
The mid-range is where FortiGate stops being a branch appliance and starts being infrastructure: redundant power as standard, SFP+ and SFP28 optics rather than fixed copper, and session tables measured in tens of millions.
More on choosing within this range
It is also where the price-per-gigabit curve is steepest, and where model choice is least obvious. The 400G and the 700G share an identical interface complement and identical 164 Gbps firewall throughput, yet the 700G does twice the threat protection (26 Gbps against 13). The 1000F has higher raw firewall throughput than the 900G but less than half its threat protection. Reading only the front-page number will lead you to the wrong box here more often than anywhere else in the range.
The 1800F introduces Hyperscale licensing, which lifts concurrent sessions from 12 million to 40 million and new-sessions-per-second from 750,000 to 2 million. If you are terminating carrier-scale or CGNAT-style session volumes rather than inspecting enterprise traffic, that licence — not the chassis — is the thing you are buying.
Before you order
Campus edge, or data centre?
Campus edge work is inspection-heavy and session-light: prioritise threat protection and SSL inspection throughput, which points at the 700G or 900G. Data-centre work is the reverse — prioritise concurrent sessions and new sessions per second, which points at the 1000F or 1800F.
What optics do you already have?
The 120G and 200G are SFP+ (10GE). The 400G, 700G and 900G add SFP28 (25GE). The 1000F and 1800F add QSFP28 (100GE) — but note that 100 GE on the 1800F requires FortiOS 7.4 or later. Optics and transceivers are a real line item at this tier; we quote them with the chassis rather than after it.
How many VDOMs?
The default is 10 across the whole family, but the maximum ranges from 10 on the 120G to 250 on the 1000F and 1800F. If you are segmenting per-tenant or per-business-unit, the VDOM ceiling can decide the model on its own.
Do you need Hyperscale?
Only the 1800F in this family offers it. If your requirement is expressed in millions of concurrent sessions rather than gigabits of inspected traffic, talk to us before ordering — the licence changes the sizing conversation completely.
