FortiGate 1800F
Hyperscale-capable — 40 million sessions and 2 million new sessions/sec
- Threat protection
- 15 Gbps
- Firewall throughput
- 198 Gbps
- IPsec VPN
- 55 Gbps
- Concurrent sessions
- 12 Million
Front panel
- QSFP cage
- SFP cage
- RJ45 copper
The 1800F is the first model in the range offering Hyperscale licensing, which lifts concurrent sessions from 12 million to 40 million and new sessions per second from 750,000 to 2 million. It carries four 100GE QSFP28 ports, and FortiOS 7.4 or later is required to use them.
Buy the 1800F for the Hyperscale licence, not the chassis. Without it, the 2600F offers more threat protection (25 vs 15 Gbps) and twice the session count in the same 2 RU. With it, the 1800F handles session volumes that have nothing to do with enterprise inspection — CGNAT, IoT fleets, carrier aggregation.
Highlights
- Hyperscale: 40 million sessions, 2 million new sessions/sec
- 4x 100GE QSFP28 (requires FortiOS 7.4+)
- 100,000 firewall policies, 250 VDOMs
- 2x 960 GB storage, DC power variant
Typical deployments
- Carrier-grade NAT and subscriber-facing aggregation
- IoT and telemetry fleets generating enormous session counts
- Environments where the requirement is stated in sessions, not gigabits
The numbers, with their conditions
Every figure below is Fortinet's own, with the test conditions it was measured under.
Performance
Fortinet's published figures. Firewall throughput is measured on UDP with no inspection enabled — size your deployment on threat protection throughput instead, which is measured with firewall, IPS, application control and malware protection all running against an enterprise traffic mix.
| Firewall throughput (1518 / 512 / 64 byte UDP) | 198 / 197 / 140 Gbps |
|---|---|
| IPsec VPN throughput (512 byte)IPsec VPN performance test uses AES256-SHA256. | 55 Gbps |
| IPS throughput (enterprise mix)IPS, application control, NGFW and threat protection are measured with logging enabled. | 22 Gbps |
| NGFW throughput (enterprise mix)NGFW performance is measured with firewall, IPS and application control enabled, enterprise mix traffic. | 17 Gbps |
| Threat protection throughput (enterprise mix)Threat protection performance is measured with firewall, IPS, application control and malware protection enabled, enterprise mix traffic. | 15 Gbps |
| SSL inspection throughput (IPS, avg. HTTPS)SSL inspection performance values use an average of HTTPS sessions of different cipher suites. | 12 Gbps |
| Application control throughput (HTTP 64K) | 34 Gbps |
| Firewall latency | 3.22 µs |
Capacity
| Concurrent sessions | 12 Million / 40 Million |
|---|---|
| New sessions / second | 750,000 / 2 Million |
| Firewall policies | 100,000 |
| Max gateway-to-gateway IPsec tunnels | 20,000 |
| Max client-to-gateway IPsec tunnels | 100,000 |
| SSL VPN throughput | 11 Gbps |
| Concurrent SSL VPN users (recommended max, tunnel mode) | 10,000 |
| Virtual domains (default / max) | 10 / 250 |
Security Fabric capacity
How much of the rest of the Fabric this model manages directly, with no separate controller.
| Max managed FortiAPs (total / tunnel) | 4,096 / 2,048 |
|---|---|
| Max managed FortiSwitches | 196 |
| Max FortiTokens | 20,000 |
Hardware
| Interfaces | 4x 100GE QSFP28, 12x 25GE SFP28, 2x 10GE SFP+, 6x GE SFP, 18x GE RJ45 |
|---|---|
| Local storage | 2x 960 GB (1801F) |
| Power supplies | Dual PS |
| Form factor | 2 RU |
| Variants | DC |
Model-specific caveats
Fortinet conditions that apply to this model in particular. Worth reading before you order.
| Note 1 | The second figure requires a Hyperscale license. |
|---|---|
| Note 2 | FortiOS 7.4 or later is required for 100 GE support. |
