How to read these numbers
The FortiGate 7000F series is a modular chassis rather than a fixed appliance. You buy the chassis, then populate it with FPM (FortiGate Processor Module) blades and FIM (FortiGate Interface Module) blades, and the interface complement is therefore determined by what you fit rather than printed on a spec sheet.
More on choosing within this range
That modularity is the point. Blades are hot-swappable, capacity is added by populating slots rather than replacing the box, and a module failure degrades capacity instead of dropping the site. This is the platform for environments where a firewall replacement window is measured in quarters and simply cannot be scheduled.
The 7081F and 7121F share identical firewall throughput at 1.89 Tbps, but the 7121F nearly doubles inspected capacity — 520 Gbps of threat protection against 312, and 1.5 Tbps of application control against 900 Gbps — in a 16 RU chassis with eight power supplies rather than 12 RU with six.
Before you order
Do you actually need a chassis?
Honestly: usually not. A pair of 4800Fs in HA covers most requirements below carrier scale at lower cost and complexity. Chassis makes sense when you need in-service capacity growth, hot-swap module redundancy, or more than ~500 Gbps of inspected throughput in one logical firewall.
How many FPM and FIM modules?
This is the real sizing exercise and it cannot be done from a web page. The published chassis figures assume a full complement. We scope module count against your throughput, interface and redundancy requirements before quoting.
Facility readiness?
12 RU and 16 RU with six to eight power supplies and DC variants. Power draw, rack depth, cooling and DC feed all need confirming before the order — a chassis that will not fit the facility is an expensive delivery.
What is the support posture?
Chassis deployments are the strongest case for FortiCare Elite with 24x7 advanced hardware replacement. We will not quote a chassis on a base support tier.
